Paragliding
Paragliding has become one of the most exciting ways to see the breath-taking views the island has to offer.
The two main jump sites up in North Cyprus are on the Besparmak Mountain range, west of St. Hilarion castle, at 2,500 and 2,600 feet. Another possible jump is over the sand dunes of the Karpaz, which is a gentler low flying glide.
Whether you want a gentle scenic flight or with an adrenaline joy ride over the landing site, your pilot can tailor your flight to suit your desire.
The pilot will go through the necessary safety information, as well as filling you in on the best way to launch and land yourself safely. You will be strapped in tandem style with your pilot who will steer you throughout the adventure.
After an easy take off, you will be treated to the spectacular NCY scenery, all the way to a gentle landing.
Some paragliding offices are located at Kyrenia Harbour. Jump days and times are determined as per weather conditions therefore it is advised to book in advance. You will also have the opportunity to treasure the occasion with photos and filming of the jump.
Whilst this may seem like an extreme activity more appealing to the younger generation, you would be surprised at those who have taken the plunge.
Did You Know?
A local NCY resident from Stirling Scotland, Peggy McAlpine, held the record for being the world’s oldest paraglide.
Making the jump on her 100th birthday in 2008 actually put her into the Guinness Book of World Records.
This was topped by a 101-year old from Utah USA, however, not to be outdone Peggy regained her world title with yet another tandem paraglide in Kyrenia at the age of 104 years 168 days, on 14 April 2012.
She sadly passed away a year later as the oldest member of the Royal British Legion and the world’s oldest paraglider, a record she still retains to the day.
